Fall Safety on the Road

Thursday, October 05, 2017

Fall is a season of cooling weather, colorful foliage...and car collisions. Fall often brings an influx of animal activity, especially with deer in mating season October through December. To help you--and your animal friends--stay safe, consider the following tips.

Follow the speed limit. This may seem like a no-brainer, but it can be all too tempting to speed it up when you're alone on the road at night. This will make it much harder to slow for animals, and will do more damage if you do hit one.

Ride the middle. On a multi-lane highway, stay in the middle lane so you have a good vantage point of any animals crossing.

High beams whenever possible. While the high beams can be rude if traffic is busy, if you're driving on a vacant road in the evening, flick them on.

Watch for signs. Those "deer crossing" signs are typically there for a reason. Stay on high alert whenever you see one.

Call the cops. If you do hit an animal, call law enforcement so they can help you proceed.
