6 Things Worth the Splurge

Friday, June 28, 2013

By Barbara Pronin

Most of us look for bargains when we shop – especially when budgets are tight and every dollar counts. But, say some consumer advocates, some consumer goods are worth paying a little more for because the better-quality products last longer and perform better during their lifetime.

Here are six products the advocates say are worth spending a little more for:

  • Bed linens – There is a big difference in comfort and durability between budget 200-thread count sheets and their higher quality cousins. Since most of us spend about eight hours a night in bed, buy the high thread count sheets you can afford.
  • Razors and razor blades – Cheap razors and blades can leave you with bits of toilet paper clinging to the cuts on your face, legs, or underarms. Paying a bit more for quality blades means a closer, less cut-prone shave.
  • Toilet paper – Speaking of toilet paper, it’s common knowledge that the cheapest brands don’t do the job right – or if they do, it’s because you use a much fatter wad. Buying better paper will probably mean you use less for better cleaning.
  • Home improvements – Whether it’s roofing a patio or remodeling a kitchen, home improvements are meant to last. Choose quality products if you are doing it yourself, or select a vendor with a proven work history at a reasonable, if not the least expensive price.
  • Shoes – Almost nothing aches more than aching feet, and that is often what you are letting yourself in for when you purchase cheap shoes. Look for real leather and a good brand that fits you well. Your feet will surely thank you.
  • Movies at the theater – No matter how large your screen at home, watching a good movie in a movie theater is almost always a better experience. No matter how frugal you are, treat yourself and your family to a movie theater night out at least every once in a while.
