Is Your Yard Safe for Halloween?

With dozens of trick-or-treaters flocking the neighborhood tonight, it's important to make sure your space is safe. Below are several helpful suggestions .

Light the way. When welcoming trick-or-treaters, use more lighting than you think may be necessary. If possible, use LED lanterns or bulbs to line your drive or walkway, making an obvious, safe route for little ghouls to travel.

Check for any trip points. While that decorative boulder, low-lying bench or seasonal decoration may be obvious to you, if they are not well lit, they could be tripping points. Also make sure no hoses, rakes or other yard tools are lying around.

Clear the path. Before dark, rake or sweep the path and porch leading the way to your front door. Should it rain, wet leaves can be a major safety concern.

Secure any decorations. Always plan for the unexpected, such as high-winds or a faulty screw and double fortify any decorations so there is no way they could injure on a guest or fly through your own window. This includes items hanging from trees or those decorative tombstones sprinkled around the yard.

Choose lights over fire. While a glowing jack-o-lanterns are endlessly charing, opt for battery-operated lights inside your pumpkin over traditional candles. Open fire is a safety concern and could potentially catch fire on dry leaves or the super hero cape of a little one.
