4 Steps for Fall Window Maintenance

As we move toward a season shift across much of the country, homeowners should begin to think about preparing their house for the cold. One of the leading ways warm air may escape your home - and cool air may infiltrate - is improperly maintained windows, which can lead to sky-high heating and cooling bills. Read on for four seasonal window-maintenance tips to tackle before fall fully hits.

Assess damage. First, look for any areas where air may be escaping or entering. Examine all your windows, keeping an eye out for spots where caulking has eroded, or any area where you can see a gap between the window frame and siding.

Wash. Before you get to fixing cracks, you'll want to give your windows a proper wash, so that grime and debris don't get in the way of your repairs.

Caulk. Now that your windows are clean and you've identified problem areas, get to recaulking any damaged areas where air may be exiting or entering.

Seal. In addition to caulking, you may want to consider taking the wooden frame off your window to add expanding foam sealant between the inner frame and the wall. Wait for the foam to dry and then trim away any extra.
