5 Ways to Create a Backyard Haven

If you've always dreamed of a stunning backyard to socialize or relax in, but felt intimidated by the planning or price point, think again. With a few small, simple tweaks, you can create an outdoor haven right in your own yard. Below are five suggestions:

Build your own patio. You don't need to splurge on lumber or call in the pros. With careful planning, you can create your own flagstone patio by yourself. A myriad of online tutorials are available, so the cost involved will be the stone alone.

Add plants. To add a lush look to your outdoor space, research “tropical”-style plants that grow well in your local summer climate. Plant them in large pots and border your patio or outdoor seating space with them. As the weather begins to cool, take the plants inside.

Stock-tank swim. If you're hankering for a pool, but don't have the budget or space, consider a stock tank—aka an "adult" kiddie pool. These large metal bins are deep enough for sitting in and large enough for a few friends, and look more attractive than the blow-up variety. You can treat them like a normal pool, and they have a plug on the side for easy draining. Place your tropical plants around the edges to blend the pool into your space.

Add seating. Cluster outdoor furniture or a cool daybed for easy lounging options. If you have overhead support, like a covered patio or deck, consider a hanging sofa or hammock.

Throw shade. Make sure to add a refuge from the summer sun. Rig a shade cloth between trees or posts, or invest in an attractive, portable easy-up. They even come with bug cloth around the sides to enclose a seating area.
