5 Ways to Prepare Your Home for a Hurricane

Storms are one of the leading offenders of weather-related damage to residential properties, and hurricanes are often on the leading end. With high winds and heavy water flow, even the most well-built structure can take a hit. If a hurricane is headed your way, consider the following preparations.

Fasten your roof. If a real windy storm is headed your way, it may be smart to install straps or clips to secure your roof to your home's frame.

Invest in storm shutters. While the best option, especially if you live in a hurricane-prone state, is to invest in permanent storm shutters, boarding your windows is the second best bet. This can help protect your panes from flying debris.

Manage your foliage. Pre-storm, trim back any dead or hanging limbs from trees, as well as shrubs and large plants, so they will be less likely to snap and fly.

Bring outdoor furniture in. This includes grills, fire pits, and pretty much anything outside that can lift off the ground.

Board your garage doors. Reinforcing your garage doors can help protect them from the elements.

Other pre-storm preparations include making sure you have flood insurance if it's available, having an evacuation plan for your family that details how to transport valuables and paperwork, and taking photos of all large-ticket items that could be damaged.
