1. Fencing. A fence that is high enough to ensure difficulty climbing, and includes a lockable gate, is the largest safety precaution you can take. If you're a parent, make sure your kids know they are never to unlock the gate or enter the pool area without an adult present.
2. Sound the alarm. Consider installing a perimeter alarm around your pool that will sound if something or someone crosses over it.
3. Pool safety cover. While a retractable pool safety cover might be a bit on the expensive side, it will heighten pool safety and is well worth the spend.
4. Safety equipment. Don't forget the basic safety equipment, like a floating life saver tied to the edge of the pool, and an extendable shepherd's hook. Having these on hand can mean the difference between life and death.
5. Ditch the diving board. While a diving board may seem like a classic pool staple, it increases the risk of injury from slipping or diving improperly.
